These fundamental inventions, which are made with coils, are from the 19th and early 20th century. This set of inventions, in fact, helped to launch mankind into the modern era. The projects explore the phenomenology behind Maxwell’s equations while introducing students to basic analog components. Step-by-step, highly visual instructions and the use and manipulation of everyday materials brings clarity to how-things-work.

Student Experiments
Build, Build, Build!

  • a spinning motor
  • a light flashing generator — a motor in reverse
  • a clicking telegraph
  • a real radio

These projects build a the foundation for understanding electronic components and the fundamentals of electromagnetism. Instructions for making a galvanometer and a relay, which are simple extensions to the primary projects and require few additional materials, are referred to in the book and on the ScienceWiz.com website.

Requires 1-2 D-cell batteries per student

The online teacher lesson plans (Teacher’s Guide sold separately) coordinate the ScienceWiz Inventions projects with web-based materials. These include animations, videos, interactives and assessment materials.

Supplemental internet materials allow students to progress at their own pace and to their own level of interest and detail. The web contents are periodically updated by scientists and educators.

These Teacher’s Packs are designed so that students have their own readers and materials. Extensions to the primary projects are feasible as there are sufficient supplies for all. This Pack has a number of consumables. Replacement consumables can be purchased on this website or by contacting ScienceWiz™.
